An Prediction Market Trader Earned $436,000 on Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Political Attention Intensifies
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
