India's capital Rises to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Alarming Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the safe threshold established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times higher than healthy limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous haze that blankets the city as the cold season approaches.

However earlier this year, the current local leadership appealed to the judicial authority to request a modification of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Legal Verdict and Implementation

Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Many air quality sensors throughout the capital registered air quality peaking around late evening to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Issue

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the capital have continued as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the worst levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, development work, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature fatalities each year in the city.
